I had so much fun talking with Morwenna, the owner of Measina Treasures of Samoa :)What is Measina Treasures of Samoa?
It's a company that supports and promotes Samoan authors, as well as all things Samoa related. When I completed my law school comic book, I did not know exactly how I would get the word out about it. This is the first law school comic book that I know of, and my friends and family have said the same. Note: If you have heard or read of a published law school comic book before mines, then please comment below so I can give proper credit to the predecessor. Outside of my book being the first of its kind, what else would attract readers to my story? In, walks Measina Treasures of Samoa :) I self-published the book, and Measina lists and promotes it. Most of my readers are from California, but some are from Australia. Measina has a world wide reach, and more access to potential buyers. Sure, I wrote the comic book as an American and first-generation law grad. But I also wrote the book from the perspective of a first-generation American whose roots are in Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji. I'm really happy to receive support as I continue to share my funny story about law student problems, solutions, and strategies. Want to watch our interview? A friend asked why I organized the comic books in this order: 1L, 2L, 3L."Law School Comic Book 1L" focuses on my first year adventures. The next volumes will dive into my second year, and third year experiences.
It's easier for me to share stories in chronological order. American law school years are organized in this order: first year (1L), second year (2L), and third year (3L). (Theoretically, I could have organized the comic book in the order of law subjects, and crammed them into one book. But that would have taken me a longer time to draft.) In the end, I'm happy with this order of volumes. When I was a first year, like many first year law students, I had no idea what was going on. The reading and writing assignments were steep and dense. The textbooks were practically in a foreign language because of the legalese and analysis. But like many experiences, these challenges became manageable with effort and dedication. I asked for help when I needed help, and I tried to shift my way of thinking to accommodate this new found knowledge. My comic book goes into the psychology of surviving as a first year law student who attended a private school. The stress levels were high and some interactions were quite toxic because of "the cuts" every semester. But I survived, and I'm proud to say that I'm a first generation doctorate holding law grad! This comic book is an easy read, and entertaining for those who like to read about first generation experiences. It's also a helpful guide for lonely first generation students who thought they were alone in the hustle and bustle of law school life. The good news is that you're not alone, and that life goes on no matter what happens in that classroom.
